‘Tis the season to be thankful

22 Dec

The valley view from mum's verandah.

This is a short post, as I’m preparing to head up to mum’s tomorrow for Christmas.

But I don’t need many words to express today’s Thankful Thursday thought.

I am…

Thankful that I was able to write that paragraph, on a computer that works, in a comfortable, temperature-controlled room.

Thankful that I have a job which allows me to take time out to be with my loved ones.

Thankful that I am in fact paid to take that holiday.

Thankful that my mum is able to live on top of a mountain, surrounded by clouds and eagles and clean air.

Thankful that she has met a man who has renewed her happiness and helps around the house.

Thankful that I have met a man who loves me unconditionally. Even when I cry after too many vodkas. Or roll out of bed with a blonde afro and blobby thighs.

Thankful to God for all these blessings.

Sara from Tis the Life has written a beautiful Thankful Thursday post. You might like to read it and leave a comment.

What are you thankful for this week?

Christians say “I do” to marriage equality

17 Nov

Here’s the thing – I believe in God. I also believe in marriage equality. For man who loves man, for woman who loves woman and for woman who loves man who loves woman and man. Whatevs. It’s all love, ain’t it?

As Dolly Parton has said, “I think everyone should be free to love who they want. There’s not enough love in the world, so find love where you can. And if you find it, consider yourself lucky.”

Amen sister.

I’ve noticed Christianity being pulled into the marriage equality debate recently. In many discussions I’ve had about the issue, someone has said something along the lines of, “I’m so sick of Christians being anti-gay marriage.’

Now, I don’t want to get into a religious debate. I think anyone should be free to believe (or not believe) whatever feels right for them. But here’s the thing – not all Christians are against marriage equality. In fact, a recent national online poll found that 53% of Australians who identify as Christian support same-sex marriage. I’m proud to be part of that 53%.

Australian Marriage Equality spokesperson Malcolm McPherson (a Christian) said about the results:

“Clearly, most Australian Christians believe same-sex marriage is consistent with Christian values like justice, love, compassion and fidelity, not opposed to these values.”

God is love, people!

Inspired by the 10,000+ Christians who have sent letters to their MPs rallying for same-sex marriage, I signed the Christians 4 Equality campaign.

I signed it for equality, I signed it for tolerance and I signed it for love. I signed it so that one day I can watch two of the most precious men in my life make the same commitment to each other that I am free to make with anyone I choose. I signed it so that my (as yet unborn) children will grow up in a world where the phrases ‘marriage equality’ and ‘gay marriage’ don’t exist – it’s just ‘marriage’. I signed it so that whether or not my kids choose a same sex or opposite sex partner to share a life with, they will never have to question or hide that decision. I signed it because I believe in love. And I believe in a God who loves.

To same-sex marriage, I say ‘bring it oooooooon!’
